What To Do With Worry
Worry!
Been there? Maybe you’re worried right now?
Last week, I was mowing the lawn (it’s seriously meditative) and met face to face with a very uncomfortable feeling running inside me. I’d been flat out ‘doing’ stuff for a couple weeks and really hadn’t checked in on my self with true presence.
“What the fuck is this feeling?” I thought. That simple enquiry opened up my awareness, I realised the feeling pulling me down had been simmering away for around 2 weeks.
So I took some long breaths, turned the volume down on my thoughts and got in touch (still mowing as I did this FYI).
Fear.
Boom! That’s what I’m feeling. And so I enquired a little further so I could get specific.
‘WORRY’
I was worried. About lots of shit. Mostly the future, a little bit of money related stuff and other bits and pieces. What was Interesting (and typical), 99% of the worry was based on imagined situations (stuff that literally wasn’t real).
You’ve been there, right?
EXHALE!
Already I felt a wash of relief and a sense of feeling cantered. Clearer. A lot clearer.
In this clear state, I remembered an amazing journaling tool I learned in my HLC training. So simple and so effective.
Bryan Tracey coined the term ‘Worry Breaks’.
If you’re distracted, drained or diffuse in your energy or state or mind, it could be time for one of these worry breaks.
Set the stop watch for 10 - 15 mins. Grab your journal, a quiet place and go into as much worry as you possibly can. All the worst case scenarios, write ‘em down. Go there intentionally with full force. Feel and acknowledge. Bullet point form can help if you’re overwhelmed.
Its essential that you’re strict with the allocated time frame. 10 to 15 minutes keeps it tight and effective. When the stop watch stops put the worrying behind you and get on with your life; your mission; your goal or objective in that moment
Done. Simple. No more wasting energy on worry.
