The Allure Of Responsibility

People who avoid responsibility become increasingly boring. A polarising claim for your Thursday evening, and I’m standing by it.

There is a certain allure to individuals who choose to hold more responsibility in their life, and it's not just because they have more power or control.

What do I mean by ‘picking up responsibility’? In a broad sense, I mean growing up. Maturing. Moving beyond the youthful focal point of ‘what’s in it for me’?

Those who take on responsibility for important roles, tasks or decisions are often forced to develop a unique set of skills and traits that make them more interesting and attractive to others.

Great leaders are typically excellent communicators, good listeners, strategic thinkers, and have the ability to inspire and motivate others through their authentic approach to life.

Picking up responsibility inevitably exposes you to a broader perspective.

Why is this so?

Because it stops being all about you.

Real responsibility and leaderships requires you to develop empathy, patience, humility and good old life experience (outside your bubble).

People who hold more responsibility often possess a strong sense of purpose and passion, which can be contagious. When others see someone who is deeply committed to their work or a cause, or their family, or community or their passions, they are often drawn towards that person's energy and enthusiasm.

It's this drive and dedication that can inspire others to expand themselves. It also demonstrates the need to take self responsibility as a first port of call.

To be able to hold great levels of responsibility, you need be responsible for you own needs, boundaries and direction. That’s not someone else’s job. It’s yours.

So, the question is, what kind of responsibility are you willing to take on to broaden your perspective, and inevitably become more interesting to yourself and those around you?
